Avoid 4 mistakes to overcome your mental block when speaking German
MISTAKE #1:
You hesitate & think about grammar instead of speaking
When you start speaking, you feel this mental block creeping in, wondering if your German is grammatically correct. You lose your flow, thinking about rules and then get confused. Instead of talking, you stare silently like a teddy bear, hesitate and feel embarrassed.
Now how do you remove hesitation?
It’s actually quite simple. In our speaking course we created the speaking exercises backed up by idea generation tips, grammar overview and vocabulary so you can focus on the actual conversation rather than struggling with what to say next and being stuck in your head. We created different exercises for any skill level from basic to advanced to enable you to focus all your energy into hesitation removal while intuitively using the right grammar, vocabulary & real life phrases.
Quick Fix : Learn practical conversation expressions and engage in German conversations. Look for a German speaking partner as they are usually very happy to help you!
MISTAKE #2:
You are not motivated to speak German
You learned numerous rules, phrases, texts written in a German book, but while speaking you’re unable to frame your own sentences, express your own ideas. You fear being judged which leads you to lose your motivation and quickly switch to English as it feels more comfortable … and you QUIT speaking German.
How to overcome your lack of motivation
We get the reason for your frustration. But you must remember why you chose to learn German in the first place. Think of your tangible, measurable reasons. Do you want to work in Germany? Are you planning to study? Do you want to converse in German with your boyfriend’s parents? Do you want to understand German movies without subtitles? These goals are worth pursuing. Don’t give up. You’ve come so far, don’t let all your hard work become undone.
Quick Fix : Join conversational groups where there is no room for judgement and everyone is motivated to speak. You focus on associating words, speaking and repeating so you eventually feel encouraged and comfortable talking.
MISTAKE #3:
You are trying to translate in your head
At beginner level you get used to translating practice, so it’s hard to give it up when you’ve achieved more advanced levels. This rather not so useful practice blocks you from thinking in German and speaking with a natural flow.
- Translating slows down the conversation flow immensely as mind scan and produce a response
- Lack of vocabulary to form logical sentences in your mind.
- Grammar and word-order of your native language interferes with that of German
How to start thinking in German?
Very likely you’re struggling with one of these issues: You lack the necessary vocabulary to form logical sentences in your mind or your native language’s grammar rules or word-order interferes with German. Fixing it takes time. You cannot force your brain to think in German, you need to constantly practice – slowly, with time, you’ll start speaking more flowingly.
Quick Fix : – Try writing a daily monologue. This can include whatever’s on your mind. Stuff about your work, your family, an opinion, it doesn’t matter. Use a mirror: Read your writings out and watch yourself speak to build confidence. Focus on fluency, not grammar. Just keep on talking.
Some bonus tips:
- Immerse yourself in the language
- Preserve proper grammar
- Learn idioms and phrases
- Break down and simplify sentences
MISTAKE #4:
You are not using German
“I’m afraid to speak German”. “When I open my mouth, words just don’t come out”. “I feel stupid when I speak German”. “I feel like a child when speaking German”. Sounds familiar? Is that a reason why you’re afraid to speak German in your daily routine that stops you from integrating in Germany?
How to build confidence when speaking German
By making it a habit to speak as much as you can every day, you can make speaking German an integrated part of your life. That’s absolutely necessary and there are no shortcuts to doing that. You’ve only got half an hour a day to practice? No problem, still better than cramming for a whole week and then not progressing to speak.
Quick Fix : – Don’t just learn, speak. Next time you hesitate to speak German, count to 3 and just start. Don’t fear making mistakes, as long as you try. You know the phrase learning by doing? It applies to learning German too. LEARN BY SPEAKING.
